ACES Awards 2013

PUBLIC TRANSPORT AWARDS 2013

BUS DRIVERS OF THE YEAR

Three Bus Drivers shared the ACES Bus Driver of the Year award for 2013.

The winners were KEITH GOODWIN (Wardles),  STEVE JONES(First)  and PAUL PULHAM (Bakers). Congratulations to our three reigning champions and to all the other drivers who attracted praise from ACES members in 2013.

SERVICE IN PUBLIC TRANSPORT

This award went to Wardles for providing a valuable and much-appreciated service to Stoke City FC fans by taking them to and from home matches at the Britannia Ground.  (nb: This service is now provide by First).

The 2013 nominations and voting resulted in a close finish. Also in the running were the staff at Stoke Station, the Support Group for Kidsgrove Station and Bakers & First for providing a service to people living off the main bus routes (Chell Heath and Mow Cop were particularly mentioned).

DINING OUT AND DRINKING 2013

BREAKFAST OF THE YEAR

The 2013 award went to BUTTERCROSS CAFÉ in Market Drayton. ACES members have been eating breakfast out more than ever before. And that has resulted in a great many establishments being recommended – in Staffordshire, Shropshire, Cheshire and Derbyshire. And what do you call Breakfast?  Although some insist on the ‘Full English’, many settle for toast & coffee or something similar. Are there a lot of would-be slimmers among us?

LUNCH OF THE YEAR

THE GREEN ROOM in Newcastle won the award yet again. And as with breakfasts, lunches can vary enormously – from tea and toast to oatcakes to lobby to a ‘full lunch’. The award was presented by the Mayor of Newcastle.

DINNER OF THE YEAR

Every year ACES members find new places at which to dine and 2013 was no exception. And, as always, it’s not just the ‘most votes’ that counts but your comments also. And this award seems to change every year.  AMORE in Newcastle was the 2013 award winner. By day it’s Bellini’s café, but on a few evenings every week it is transformed into an Italian restaurant.

PUBS OF THE YEAR

2013’s ‘Pub of the Year’ was the LYMESTONE VAULTS. The award to this Newcastle pub was presented by the Mayor of Newcastle. Although the brewery is in Stone, this Newcastle pub is the ‘brewery tap’.

The LYMESTONE VAULTS won the Gold award. The Silver award was won by the HOLY INADEQUATE, last year’s champion.  The award to this Etruria pub was presented by the editor of ‘Potters Bar’, the local CAMRA magazine. The Bronze award went to the BOAT & HORSES, another previous champion.

REAL ALES OF THE YEAR

The 2013 award went to ‘Stone the Crows’ , brewed by Lymestone Brewery of Stone, and was presented by the Mayor of Newcastle. The runners-up were ‘Gothic from Enville Brewery (Silver) and ’99 Red Baboons’  from Blue Monkey Brewery (Bronze).
